Join scientists, diplomats, policymakers, and coastal leaders for an evening exploring ocean diplomacy, from deep-sea research to maritime law. Diplomacy Below the Surface brings diverse voices together to tackle urgent conservation and climate challenges.
Hear from Dr. Melody Brown Burkins on Arctic science diplomacy, gain insights from leading ocean researchers, and join the conversation about building cooperation across disciplines. This isn't just about policy or science. It's about imagination and action shaping the future of ocean stewardship.

Interview with John M. Martinis | Nobel Laureate in Physics 2025
An interview with Prof. John M. Martinis, co-recipient of the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics. He shared the prize with John Clarke and Michel H. Devoret for discovering macroscopic quantum tunnelling and energy quantisation in an electric circuit. Their work laid the groundwork for today’s superconducting quantum computers.
We discuss what his research means for society and why it matters to policymakers and political advisors. Prof. Martinis also shares his advice on the role of science and scientists in a fast-changing world.
The conversation is meant for a general audience, so no technical background is needed. Interview conducted by Dr. Mirko Rossini, Advisory Board member of the Science Diplomacy Grid.
